π 7 Tajweed Rules Every Beginner Must Know
Perfect Your Quran Recitation with Clarity & Confidence
Learning the Quran is not just about reading β itβs about reading it correctly. Tajweed (ΨͺΨ¬ΩΩΨ―) is the set of rules that helps us pronounce the Quran the way it was revealed β with beauty, clarity, and respect.
If you're just starting your Quran journey (or helping your child start theirs), here are 7 essential Tajweed rules every beginner must understand.
1. π£οΈ Makharij β Correct Letter Pronunciation
Each Arabic letter comes from a specific part of the mouth or throat. Learning where each sound originates is the first key to accurate recitation.
β
Example: The letter βΨΉβ (βAyn) comes from deep in the throat β different from English sounds.
2. π¬οΈ Sifaat β Characteristics of Letters
Every letter has natural qualities, like being strong, soft, airy, or heavy. These are called sifaat.
β
Knowing these helps avoid common mistakes, like mixing up Ψ³ (seen) and Ψ΅ (saad).
3. π Rules of Noon Sakinah & Tanween
When the letter Ω (noon) or tanween (Ω Ω Ω) comes with sukoon, it follows specific rules based on the next letter.
There are 4 types:
Izhaar (clear)
Idghaam (merge)
Iqlab (flip)
Ikhfaa (hide)
π― These affect how the sound is delivered β smooth, soft, or merged.
4. π Meem Sakinah Rules
When meem (Ω ) has sukoon, and is followed by certain letters, it follows similar rules as above:
Idghaam Shafawi
Ikhfaa Shafawi
Izhaar Shafawi
π Practicing these improves fluency and correctness in recitation.
5. π Qalqalah β Echoing Letters
Some letters (ΩΨ Ψ·Ψ Ψ¨Ψ Ψ¬Ψ Ψ―) are recited with a slight echo or bounce when they carry sukoon or stop on them.
Example: "Al-Haqq" (Ψ§ΩΩΨΩΩΩΩ) β the βQafβ should bounce slightly at the end.
6. π¨ Ghunna β Nasal Sound
Ghunna is a nasal humming sound, often heard in Idghaam and Ikhfaa rules.
It lasts for 2 beats and adds rhythm and beauty to the recitation.
7. π Madd β Elongation Rules
Madd refers to stretching certain sounds for 2, 4, or even 6 counts depending on the type of Madd.
β
This rule teaches where and how long to stretch, without changing the meaning.
